This application was developed during a 48 hour hackathon.
Right away we knew that we wanted to do something community oriented. We chose to focus on our local beaches, since their popularity means that they are often littered with trash.
We designed this app to make it easier for people to connect with other volunteers to help keep our beaches clean - every little bit helps, and we hope to inspire people to take charge and be proud of their community.
Part of the challenge for this hackathon was to integrate four APIs into our application.
We knew that we wanted it to be informative and responsive, so we chose to use:
To make it easier for people to see what beach clean up events were happening near them, we chose to make our map the focus of our screen.
Each icon on the map displays a modal when clicked that displays relevant information about the event, as well as the current weather at that location so you can plan your event.
This hackathon was our first time using AJAX calls and working with APIs, and figuring out how to integrate them with our code was fun and challenging.
We also made sure to incorporate organizational tools and methods (notably Meistertask and Agile) into our planning stage, which made a HUGE difference in making sure that we stayed on task and met our goals.
